Overview

The Open Automatic Data Exchange (OpenADE) Task Force within the UCAIug Open Smart Grid Subcommittee is responsible for developing business requirements, use cases, and system requirements specifications that allow a consumer to grant a third party access to their electric data and in accordance with that authorization, the utility delivers the consumer data to the third party using a standard interoperable machine-to-machine (M2M) interface. These recommendations will be developed according to guidelines provided by standards development organizations (SDOs) such as IEC, referenced in OpenADE documents, with the goal of gaining consensus and adoption as international standards.

Participation

The OpenADE TF holds open meetings and all interested parties are encouraged to participate by joining the meetings and providing comments on documents in progress to ensure compatibility with the goals and standards of organizations such as IEC, NAESB, NEMA, OASIS, and ZigBee, as well as Utilities, Vendors, Consumer, and Regulatory groups. In general this involves ensuring that required data elements are present in both OpenADE as well as interfaces with which it must interoperate, but could also include requirements for extensibility, service discovery, and other aspects.

Task Force meetings are held weekly via teleconference, and new tasks, voting and coordination is done at quarterly OpenSG meetings. Materials are approved by vote by companies participating in OpenADE. Issues are tracked, discussed, and addressed by the group. Project work is performed in English, using facilities provided by UCAIug OpenSG, and project materials are shared on SmartGridiPedia, under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 IPR license.

Scope

The functional requirements include the following major areas.

  1. Consumer granting a registered 3rd Party access to their consumer data (e.g. consumption data, HAN devices, etc.) by authorizing the Utility to send the data to the 3rd Party. The Consumer may authorize this access at the Utility web portal or at the 3rd Party web portal.
  2. The Utility transferring the consumer data to the authorized 3rd Party or to the Consumer in accordance with the limits set forth in the authorization request.
    1. OpenADE version 1.0 will include an initial transfer of historical consumption data after the initial authorization and an on-going periodic transfer of interval consumption for the term specified in the authorization.
    2. OpenADE version 2.0 will allow near-real time transfer of consumption data from Smart Energy HAN devices to Consumer or 3rd Party, and will enable the sending of prices to HAN devices and billing information.
